{"id":8090393,"date":"2023-04-17T06:47:59","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T13:47:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aadev22.local\/?post_type=agile-games&#038;p=8090393"},"modified":"2024-10-02T12:35:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T19:35:56","slug":"everyone-is-right-only-partially-exploring-perspectives-improving-relationships","status":"publish","type":"agile-games","link":"https:\/\/agilealliance.org\/agile-games\/everyone-is-right-only-partially-exploring-perspectives-improving-relationships\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyone is right, only partially"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Exploring Perspectives, Improving Relationships<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The quality of the relationships between people is directly related to how much they trust each other, and trust (as a manifestation of Psychological Safety) is known to underpin happiness and high performance in any team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relationships often have challenges and get stuck because of different perspectives not being aired, explored, and understood &#8211; and differences going unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an exercise to help show how people&#8217;s different perspectives have an influence on what they think and feel, and how they behave \u2013 and how that&#8217;s not always conducive to helping a relationship. This then sets the scene for discussions concerning how people can get a better awareness and understanding of other&#8217;s perspectives \u2013 hopefully helping to improve relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Credit: <em>&#8220;Everyone is right, only partially&#8221;<\/em> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/crrglobal.com\/about\/orsc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">ORSC System Rule<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Exercise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Participants:<\/em><\/strong> 2 to 6<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Duration:<\/em><\/strong> At least one hour. Longer if deeper discussions are desired and\/or an actual conflict in a relationship is being referenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Materials:<\/em><\/strong> Pen and paper for each participant. Ideal, but optional: a large screen on which to play the video clip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Pre-preparation:<\/em><\/strong> Maybe watch the video clip for the first time without reading the descriptive text, to get a good &#8220;A-ha&#8221; moment from it for yourself. Definitely practice pausing at the right points described below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1) For each participant, assign them a character from the video:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Young man, standing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Woman, standing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Man in the hat<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The descriptions are intentionally bland &amp; neutral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong> Participants must pay close attention when the video is playing to get the most insights from their character. Look at their faces, body language, how they&#8217;re moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I sometimes assign characters to participants intentionally \u2013 those in situations opposite to the characters in the video: &#8220;opposite&#8221; to provide a different perspective for them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Encourage people to &#8220;really get into character&#8221;, hence the use of &#8220;you&#8221; in the questions below.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2) Listed below are a series of questions:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Review these and make preparations&nbsp;e.g. headings\/sections on a notepad. Later in this section is a link to the video clip to be used; pause the clip&nbsp;at each of the three timestamps (detailed after the questions) and ask these questions at each pause, asking people to <strong>write down<\/strong> their answers for discussion when everyone is ready: <br><br><em>From the perspective of your assigned character\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>What are you thinking?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What are you feeling?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What are the other two characters thinking?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What are the other two characters feeling?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>To the woman and man in the hat: What&#8217;s your thoughts on the young man?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explore any differences in answers between the characters, <em>&#8220;Why? What&#8217;s different for you?&#8221;<\/em> Go with any discussions that arise &#8211; this is where the gold is, and where the magic comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_SsccRkLLzU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this clip<\/a> <strong>full screen and audio off<\/strong>, as the descriptive text and narration gives things away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"The Guardian&#039;s 1986 &#039;Points of view&#039; advert\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_SsccRkLLzU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Timestamps to pause at:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">0:01 second (making sure the scene is fully visible after it has faded in)<br>0:08 seconds<br>0:16 seconds &#8211; <strong><em>keep the clip paused here, do not play to the end<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3) After discussions have concluded at the second pause<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now continue to watch the rest of the clip. When it&#8217;s finished, ask the questions:<br>To the woman and man in the hat:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How do you feel about the young man now?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you had all the information, would you have felt the way you did earlier?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the young man:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How did you feel when you heard how the others felt earlier on?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"48dd\">Now is a good time to watch the whole clip in one go and with the audio on. Reflect on how the picture for each character grew during the exercise\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"45b4\">Reflect on how first impressions can anchor a view and that apparent supporting information can reinforce that view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"cbe9\">Also reflect on how, despite information that\u2019s accumulated and built to date, it is important to have an open mind and be prepared to&nbsp;<strong><em>change belief(s)<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;when new information presents itself. Because everyone has different perspectives which need to be shared, respected, and taken into consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Then ask everyone:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What have you all learned from this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What will you do differently in the future?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional discussion topics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Being judgemental<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stereotypes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reputations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prejudices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-awareness and consideration for others<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Additional questions to ask<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How quickly had people made up their mind on something?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How much, or how little, information did they need before fixing their view?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How aware are the participants of themselves when they are doing this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How aware are they of the possible thoughts and feelings of others when they&#8217;re doing this?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How surprised were they when more information came to light?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Were there any other feelings? Embarrassment, even shame?
